We checked in with the inaugural New York City Marathon winner, now 69, who finished in 3:46:25 this year:

“I think the marathon is six miles too long. I felt great until the last six miles, and then I kind of fell apart. I’m a little disappointed, to tell you the truth. 3:30 was the goal. But that’s the way it goes.

“The fans, they were unbelievable. When the people are cheering for you, it puts a lot of pressure on you and the other runners.”

“The start of the race is just unbelievable. It’s really exciting to be a part of it. But the best thing was Meb. An American winning the race. That’s great. That’s the best thing.”
